Ping (ICMP)
ICMP is part of the IP protocol, and is used to send anomaly reports and control messages. ICMP messages are generated automatically when errors occur in the transmission such as: - no route to the destination - route loop - errors in packet headers The main 'user interface' to ICMP is the ping program, which sends ICMP ECHO packets and expects ICMP ECHO REPLY packets.
Advanced Network Monitor can check a server for availability by sending ICMP ECHO packets to the server and waiting for ICMP ECHO REPLY packets from the server.
You need to enter the following parameters:
Server address: Enter a server name in this field. It may be a domain name, URL or IP address. If you enter an IP address Advanced Network Monitor will try to resolve it.
Server port. You can choose one of the following standard ports in the drop-down list: POP3, SMTP, IMAP, HTTP, FTP, NNTP, Telnet, DHCP, Socks.
Check count. You may specify a try count to ping server before the server will marked as "Error".
If you want to get more detailed information about problems in your network you may check the "Trace Route on error" option. In this case the program will send ICMP packets to routers and intermediate servers waiting for a reply from them.
